WEEK OF FEBRUARY 17

Too Good For Drugs Program
During our 6th session of T.G.F.D., Deputy Seward shared a power point presentation about tobacco. Students learned different ways people use tobacco and how each of those uses negatively affects the human body. Students received a fact sheet about tobacco that should be shared and discussed with a parent.

Thank You to Valentine Volunteers
A special thanks to Mrs. Daly, Mrs. Arlt, and Mrs. Potter for planning and running a great party. Also, thank you to Mrs. Veselak and Mrs. Morrison for providing paper goods, treats, and drinks for us to enjoy. Finally, thanks to Mrs. Flynn for contacting and organizing the volunteers for me. Our hearts were all a-flutter from all the fun!

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 10

Too Good For Drugs Program
During our 5th session of T.G.F.D., Deputy Seward discussed how the decisions we make are influenced by friends and family, as well as our own personal values. Although students did not receive a homework assignment, I encourage families to share with each other about times when important decisions had to be made and how others influenced those decisions.

Valentine Reminders
Students will be able to exchange Valentines with classmates on Valentine's Day. Please note that if students choose to exchange Valentines, they should bring one for each classmate. A class list was given to each student. Also, students were encouraged to bring a bag or box in which to collect their Valentines. We will not be using class time to decorate these, but students may do so at home if they wish.

Subject Update:
  • Spelling - The Lesson 18 pretest will be given on Monday. The students will be assigned homework during the week to practice their words, and a final test will be given on Friday. *Students may now only print 5 words "just in case." Please continue to work on cursive letter formation at home!
  • English - We will continue our work on a writing piece inspired by the book, Some Things Are Scary. Students will be encouraged to "show, don't tell" when they describe some things that are scary to them. We will also start our next grammar unit on adjectives.
  • Reading - Students will continue to practice a variety of reading strategies as we work with historical fiction: author's purpose and viewpoint, fact and opinion, and cause and effect. 2nd Trimester reading projects were all turned in on time! The students had the opportunity to share these with their classmates, and I can't wait to take a closer look at them. There were some really creative shape booklets made to represent the people in the biographies!
  • Science - Students will learn about atoms and molecules. They will identify the different between an element and a compound, and make models of different molecules.
  • Social Studies - We will review the first lesson about the expansion of New Spain, and then learn how exploration of the Mississippi River led to new French colonies.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - The Chapter 5 Test is scheduled for Monday, February 10! Then we will head into the next chapter about multiplication and division of decimals. The first few lessons explore multiplication using models.
