WEEK OF APRIL 27

Open House/Book Fair/Ice Cream Social
I hope that you will be able to join us Thursday evening for our annual Spring Open House. The students have several projects they would love to show off, and it is a great time to find a good book and socialize with fellow Prairieview parents while enjoying a sweet treat!
*The online book fair opens April 25th - click the link for more details: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=prairieviewelementaryschool15

Subject Update:

ELA (English/Language Arts)
  • Spelling - No lesson due to MAP testing and field trip on Friday.
  • English - Students will continue working on their ABC books of adjectives. This is a chance for students to demonstrate knowledge of a variety of adjectives and their meanings, as well as build their vocabulary by searching for some adjectives they don't already know! We will also continue writing an article for our Me Front Page projects.
  • Reading -We will continue with our theme, Hardships in History. Students will read various texts to help them answer our essential questions: How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events? How are hardships in history similar and different?
Science - Our final unit will be in physical science: Matter and Energy. Students will begin with a look at the structure of matter.

Social Studies - We are reading about the American colonies declaring independence from Britain in 1776. Do you know why signing the Declaration of Independence was a dangerous act? We will find out in the week ahead.

Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We have moved into Unit 7 on multiplying and dividing fractions. Next week, we only have Math on Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, students will finish up working in small groups to "explore and make discoveries" about multiplying and dividing using models. Then students will be assigned a Google Classroom assignment which will teach them how to multiply and divide without models.

WEEK OF APRIL 20

Photo Needed
Your child has been asked to bring in an 8x10" photo for a special writing project. A school photo, or portrait, works best; but it can be any current picture featuring just your student. Also, although an 8x10" size is preferred, I can enlarge other photos for your child if necessary. Photos will be returned to you when we are finished using them. Thank you in advance for your help!

P.R.I.D.E! Awards
We had so many exciting things going on before Spring Break that I forgot to announce our March PRIDE! winners. Congratulations to Kaylee for putting the P in Pride for her "Positive Attitude." Also, new in March was the exclamation mark, added to our award ceremony to honor someone who is spectacular during special area classes (like Art and Music). Congratulations to Abdul Samad for earning the first award of its kind. We are proud of the two of you!
