WEEK OF MAY 31

End of Year Tidbits...
I am looking forward to an amazing final week of school together! As we draw the year to a close, students will be creating a memory book. I have various pictures from throughout the year for students to include in their book, but students may choose to bring in other pictures from outside of school, scrapbook paper, stickers, tape, gel pens, etc. to make their book unique and special. Thank you to Mrs. Portell and Mrs. Marten for generously picking up our developed pictures!!

WEEK OF MAY 23

5th Grade Visit to Lakeview
Our fifth graders will visit Lakeview on Monday to tour the school building, learn a little about the life of a 6th grader, and ask questions.

Lakeview Book Check-Out
Each year, students in 5th grade have an opportunity to check out paperback books from the Lakeview library for the summer. Mrs. Hayes will meet with our class on Wednesday, May 25th to share her guidelines for summer check-out, and hopefully students will leave with a small collection of great summer reads!

Surprise Baby Shower a Success!
Thank you to all who contributed to Mrs. Sanchez's baby shower. She was quite surprised to see that our Social Studies lesson plans were just a "cover up" for her shower. The book of advice from the students is something she will treasure. A special thanks to Mrs. Youngfelt for helping me plan the event and baking cupcakes, Mrs. Crane for supplying us with a delicious spread of treats, and Mrs. Peterson for sending in drinks to enjoy.

WEEK OF MAY 16

PARCC Testing - Science
5th grade students will be taking their final PARCC test in Science on Monday. Please encourage your child to persevere and do their best! Also, Chromebooks need to be fully charged for testing.

Subject Update:

  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our unit, Hardships in HistoryStudents will recite their section of the poem "Paul Revere's Ride" on Thursday, May 19. Students have read a short story entitled "Katie's Trunk," and will continue working with this text to identify examples of similes and answer text dependent questions. We will also begin working with List #12 word parts.
  • Science - Chapter 15 will teach us about energy. The first lesson will help us understand the difference between the two main forms of energy - potential and kinetic.
  • Social Studies - Now that we understand why the American colonists formally declared their independence from Britain, we will read more about the Revolutionary War. Students will hear about the contributions of a variety of people who helped the Continental Army win important battles.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will review the information from Topic 9 about rational numbers on Monday. A Topic 9 Homework Review is planned for Tuesday instead of a test (since most of the concepts simply took our work with integers to the next level). Then we will move into ratios and proportional relationships.
