WEEK OF MAY 31

End of Year Tidbits...
I am looking forward to an amazing final week of school together! As we draw the year to a close, students will be creating a memory book. I have various pictures from throughout the year for students to include in their book, but students may choose to bring in other pictures from outside of school, scrapbook paper, stickers, tape, gel pens, etc. to make their book unique and special. Thank you to Mrs. Portell and Mrs. Marten for generously picking up our developed pictures!!

5th Grade Bowling
Here are a few reminders about 5th grade bowling scheduled for Wednesday, May 1st:
*Students will not be issued bowling shoes - gym shoes are a must!!
*Students may bring their own bowling shoes/balls if they choose.
*Concessions will offer a special of 2 slices of cheese pizza and a 16 oz. drink for
  $3.00 (plus tax).

  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will wrap up our unit, Hardships in History with a look at arguments for and against Manifest Destiny.
  • Science - Students will continue to learn about different forms of energy and how energy can change from one form to another.
  • Social Studies - Students will hear how the Revolutionary War comes to an end.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students had their final math class on Friday. I shared with the students how pleased I am with their progress and growth this year. It was a pleasure getting to know and work with them!

WEEK OF MAY 23


5th Grade Visit to Lakeview
Our fifth graders will visit Lakeview on Monday to tour the school building, learn a little about the life of a 6th grader, and ask questions.  

Lakeview Book Check-Out
Each year, students in 5th grade have an opportunity to check out paperback books from the Lakeview library for the summer. Mrs. Hayes will meet with our class on Wednesday, May 25th to share her guidelines for summer check-out, and hopefully students will leave with a small collection of great summer reads!

Surprise Baby Shower a Success!
Thank you to all who contributed to Mrs. Sanchez's baby shower. She was quite surprised to see that our Social Studies lesson plans were just a "cover up" for her shower. The book of advice from the students is something she will treasure. A special thanks to Mrs. Youngfelt for helping me plan the event and baking cupcakes, Mrs. Crane for supplying us with a delicious spread of treats, and Mrs. Peterson for sending in drinks to enjoy.

  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our unit, Hardships in HistoryStudents will learn about key events in history that led to Manifest Destiny. We will also continue working with List #12 word parts, with an assessment on Thursday.  
  • Science - Students will learn about different forms of energy and how energy can change from one form to another.
  • Social Studies - Students will continue to hear about the contributions of a variety of people who helped the Continental Army win important battles. They will also hear how the Revolutionary War comes to an end.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will continue to learn about ratios and proportional relationships. There will be a homework review near the end of the week.

WEEK OF MAY 16


PARCC Testing - Science
5th grade students will be taking their final PARCC test in Science on Monday. Please encourage your child to persevere and do their best! Also, Chromebooks need to be fully charged for testing.


Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our unit, Hardships in HistoryStudents will recite their section of the poem "Paul Revere's Ride" on Thursday, May 19. Students have read a short story entitled "Katie's Trunk," and will continue working with this text to identify examples of similes and answer text dependent questions. We will also begin working with List #12 word parts.  
  • Science - Chapter 15 will teach us about energy. The first lesson will help us understand the difference between the two main forms of energy - potential and kinetic.
  • Social Studies - Now that we understand why the American colonists formally declared their independence from Britain, we will read more about the Revolutionary War. Students will hear about the contributions of a variety of people who helped the Continental Army win important battles.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will review the information from Topic 9 about rational numbers on Monday. A Topic 9 Homework Review is planned for Tuesday instead of a test (since most of the concepts simply took our work with integers to the next level). Then we will move into ratios and proportional relationships.

WEEK OF MAY 9



April PRIDE! Awards
Congratulations to Mark for earning the award for Determination. Also, kudos to Joe for earning the Specials Standout award (not pictured due to absence). Who will be our last award winner in May? Only a handful of weeks before we will know!
Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our unit, Hardships in HistoryStudents will practice reading aloud the poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," and look at a timeline for "The Real Midnight Ride." We will also continue our work with idioms, adages, and proverbs. The Word Work List #11 assessment is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11.
  • Science - We will review about chemical properties and changes. Then we will prepare for the Chapter 14 Test scheduled for Thursday, May 12.
  • Social Studies - We will begin Chapter 9 about the colonists declaring their independence from Britain, and fighting and winning the Revolutionary War.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will learn about rational numbers in Topic 9. Rational numbers include integers, plus all positive fractions and decimals and their opposites.

WEEK OF MAY 2

Open House/Book Fair
I enjoyed seeing so many of you Thursday evening. I know the students appreciated the opportunity to show off their hard work on various classroom projects. I hope you had a chance to view the slide show of pictures from the beginning of the year up to now - we have done so much learning and growing together since September!

MAP Testing

Your students will be taking the Math MAP test on Monday, and the ELA MAP test on Tuesday. Please remind them to charge their Chromebooks!
Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our unit, Hardships in HistoryStudents will read the poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and compare the events of the poem to the story And Then What Happened, Paul Revere? Students will also work with List #11 word parts, and learn about idioms, adages, and proverbs.
  • Science - Lesson 3 will focus on chemical properties and changes. We will work to understand how chemical changes are different than physical changes in matter.
  • Social Studies - We will have a real tea party while watching a video about the Boston Tea Party on Monday. Then we will work to review all lessons to prepare for the Chapter 8 Test on Thursday, May 5.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will finish their rotation through a variety of stations on Monday after we complete our Math MAP testing. We do not have Math on Tuesday due to ELA MAP testing. There will be a Topic 8, L. 4-6 Homework Review on Wednesday. We will not have Math on Thursday due to another classroom's field trip. The Topic 8 Test is planned for Friday, May 6!

WEEK OF APRIL 25

PARCC Testing
Your students will finish PARCC testing for ELA/Literacy on Monday. Please remind them to charge their Chromebooks and have their earbuds!

Paul Revere Assembly - History Mystery Solved!
Who stole Paul Revere's horse? The students successfully solved the mystery during this interactive play by working collaboratively in small groups to figure out a series of clues. Nice job, 5th graders!


Museum of Science and Industry - Colorful Chemistry Lab
Thank you to Mrs. Youngfelt and Mrs. Coronado for chaperoning our field trip. The students enjoyed their trip to the Museum of Science and Industry. We learned a lot about chemical changes, and some of the indicators that a chemical reaction has occurred. Here are some memorable moments from our lab experience.

Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our unit, Hardships in HistoryStudents will continue working with the text, "And Then What Happened, Paul Revere?" There is a quiz over Paul Revere vocabulary scheduled for Wednesday. Students will also begin working with List #11 word parts. 
  • Science - We have been learning about physical properties of matter. Next week, we will learn about mixtures and solutions. Mixtures and solutions are physical changes because the substances in them do not permanently combine and their properties don't change.
  • Social Studies - As we continue in Chapter 8,  we will hear how the American Revolution began with the battles of Lexington and Concord.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will take a Topic 8, Lessons 1-3 Homework Review on Monday. Then we will work to understand how to plot integers on the coordinate plane and find distances between two points.

WEEK OF APRIL 18

PARCC Testing
Your students will continue to take PARCC Tests this week through Monday of the following week. We have completed Math and will move on to the ELA/Literacy tests. Please encourage your students to do their best, and remind them to charge their Chromebooks and have their earbuds!
Remember that students can access the practice tests for PARCC using the "TestNav" app on their Chromebooks. They may practice at home if needed so that they feel confident on testing days.
Students may encounter some difficult questions during testing. I encourage them to persevere. My expectation is that they finish each test being able to say, "I gave my best effort!"

Museum of Science and Industry Field Trip Reminders
On Friday, April 22nd, our class will be heading to the Museum of Science and Industry to experience the "Colorful Chemistry" lab. Although we will have time to explore some of the exhibits at the museum, that time will be limited and students will not be able to visit the gift shop. Please make sure your child has a sack lunch and/or money to purchase lunch from the museum's cafeteria.

  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We have begun our final unit, Hardships in HistoryWe have had some amazing small group discussions to define "hardship," and begin answering about our essential questions: How does the time period of the hardship impact future decisions and events? How are hardships in history similar and different? We will keep these questions in mind as we read our first selection, the song lyrics for Yankee Doodle. Also, students will take an assessment over List #10 word parts on Wednesday. 
  • Science - Students are learning how matter changes from one state to another. Ask your child how zero degrees Celsius can be both the melting point and the freezing point of water.
  • Social Studies - We will begin Chapter 8, "The Road to War." In the first lesson, students will hear how tensions between the English colonists began to grow when the British imposed new taxes on them.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We will continue Topic 8 about integers. Students will learn how to compare and order integers, and work to understand the absolute value of numbers.

  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will conclude our Nature's Fury unit. Students will finish their writing activity, a retelling of the book Eight Days: A Story of Haiti from the perspective of a different character. We will also work with List #10 word parts. 
  • Science - Students will learn about the three states of matter and the characteristics of each of these states.
  • Social Studies - The Chapter 7 Test is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12. Then we will move into Chapter 8, "The Road to War." In the first lesson, students will hear how tensions between the English colonists began to grow when the British imposed new taxes on them.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - Students will be taking the Math PARCC Tests during most of our time together, but we will use the remaining time scheduled for our Number Corner activities and Digits lessons. We will be jumping ahead to Topic 8 about integers (since Topic 7 "Fluency with Decimals" is covered through our Number Corner activities).

WEEK OF APRIL 4

Too Good For Drugs Graduation
Thank you to all who were able to join us for our TGFD Graduation. The students chosen to read their Promise Letters did an outstanding job; congratulations again to Nina for being selected to read from our classroom. Also, our guest speaker (former student Adam Rosignal) shared some real life experiences where the strategies taught in the TGFD program proved to be valuable. I hope our students remember his strong message about making good choices in life. Finally, thank you to all who contributed to the group gift for Deputy Seward. He very much appreciated the gift certificates.



Naper Settlement Trip
Thank you to Mrs. Portell for being our parent chaperone for the Naper Settlement field trip. Although the weather was a bit cold and rainy, we really enjoyed our experience. Here are a few pictures from the school house, printer, and log home.


Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We are coming to the end of our theme Nature's Fury. Students will finish their discussion of point of view and perspective with the book, Eight Days: A Story of Haiti. They will also learn how to use their knowledge of different verb tenses to convey changes in time in their writing. We will also begin working with List #10 word parts. 
  • Science - Students will create models of molecules, determine if a molecule is an element or compound, and read about the Periodic Table of Elements. We will also play a game called SYMBO to practice what we learn about the Table of Elements.
  • Social Studies - Students will finish up Lesson 3 about the French and Indian War. Then they will start reviewing for the Chapter 7 Test scheduled for Tuesday, April 12.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We will be reviewing multiplication and division of fractions to prepare for the Unit B post-test later this week. We will also finish up our remaining Number Corner activities from March before heading into our April activities.

Notes about "Think Spring Spirit Week"
Although we want everyone to participate in our spirit week activities, please keep in mind that 5th graders have TGFD Graduation on Wednesday, and it is expected that students dress appropriately for the occasion. Also, 5th graders visit Naper Settlement on Thursday, and students need to dress appropriately for the weather since several activities will be outside during this field trip.

Tuesday - Hat & Shades Day - Wear your favorite hat and sunglasses
Wednesday - Think Spring Day - Wear spring colors

Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our theme Nature's Fury. Students will read a picture book entitled, Eight Days: A Story of Haiti. In this text, students will learn how point of view and perspective influence the way a story is told. Students will also continue working with "thin" and "thick" questions. A quiz over perfect tense verbs is planned for Tuesday, then we will learn how to use our knowledge of different verb tenses to convey changes in time in our writing.
  • Science - We will learn about atoms and the particles that make them up. We will also learn how atoms are combined in different ways to create molecules.
  • Social Studies - Students will review how the French explored and built settlements along the Mississippi River. Then we will begin to read about the French and Indian War, a war that had the British, French, and Native Americans fighting for control of a large part of North America.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - The Topic 6, Lesson 4-5 Homework Review is planned for Monday, then we will spend a day reviewing for the Topic 6 Test planned for Wednesday.

Congratulations to Nina! Her TGFD Promise Letter was selected to be read during our upcoming Too Good For Drugs Graduation. This was a difficult decision because so many students wrote letters that provided specific details learned in the program and heartfelt promises to parents to stay drug-free. We look forward to hearing Nina's thoughts about the program on March 23rd!

  • Science - We will begin our physical science unit, "Properties of Matter." Students will start with a look at the structure of matter in Chapter 14.
  • Social Studies - Now that we have taken a look at how the Spanish extended colonies into North America, we will hear how the French explored the Mississippi and established new settlements.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We will continue Topic 6 about dividing fractions, applying what we have learned to problem solving around real-world situations. The Topic 6 Test is planned for Friday, March 18th.

  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We will continue Topic 6 about dividing fractions, using number lines to model the division, then using the standard algorithm to solve. The Topic 6, L. 1-3 Homework Review is planned for Wednesday, March 9th.

Too Good For Drugs
During our last session of T.G.F.D., Deputy Seward played a game to review all of the information learned during the program. All students have written their Promise Letters. I look forward to reading these and choosing one to be read at the graduation ceremony. Your child should have given you a copy of the letter as a formal promise to make good decisions and stay drug-free.

Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our theme Nature's Fury with a focus on reading and writing about hurricanes. There is a vocabulary quiz over earthquake and hurricane vocabulary scheduled for Wednesday, March 2! Students will also continue working with perfect verb tenses, and do activities to review all of the word parts we have studied so far.
  • Science - We will learn about instruments used to measure different factors of weather. We will also learn about 4 types of air masses, and cold and warm fronts.
  • Social Studies - The Chapter 6 Test is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1st! Then we will begin Chapter 7 about the fight for the continent of North America. It starts with a look at the Spanish heading north to establish colonies in Florida and New Mexico.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We have just begun Topic 6 about dividing fractions. We will explore using number lines to model the division, then learn the standard algorithm for solving division problems involving unit fractions, other fractions, and mixed numbers.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 22

Too Good For Drugs
During our 9th session of T.G.F.D., Deputy Seward talked about the dangers of inhalants. Students received a fact sheet about inhalants that should be shared with a parent. Also, students were assigned a "Promise Letter" that needs to be completed by Wednesday, February 24th!

Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our theme Nature's Fury with a focus on hurricanes. Students will continue to add information to their K-W-L charts, work with vocabulary, and write responses to questions about natural disasters. Students will also learn how to form and use the perfect verb tenses, and do activities to review all of the word parts we have studied so far.
  • Science - We will continue to learn about different types of clouds that may form as water condenses in the atmosphere.
  • Social Studies - Students will make some of the simple toys that children played with during colonial times. They will also read about slavery in the colonies. The Chapter 6 Test is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1st!
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We will finish up Topic 5 about multiplying fractions. The Topic 5 Test is scheduled for Wednesday, February 24. Then we will head into Topic 6 about dividing fractions.

Students earned a classroom reward for good behavior. They will be having a movie lunch on Wednesday, February 17th. Students may bring a stuffed animal and dress in "comfy clothes" for this special treat.

A special thanks to Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Singh, and Mrs. Youngfelt for planning and running a great party. Also, thank you to Mrs. Coronado and Mrs. Orzechowska for providing paper goods, treats, and drinks for us to enjoy. Our hearts were all a-flutter from all the fun!










Subject Update:


  • ELA (English/Language Arts) - We will continue our theme Nature's Fury with a focus on hurricanes. We will identify the two "ingredients" for a hurricane, and create a cause-effect chain that shows the progression of events in the development of a hurricane. Students will continue to add information to their K-W-L charts, work with vocabulary, and write responses to questions about natural disasters. Students will take the Word Work List #8 Assessment on Tuesday, then do activities to review all of the word parts we have studied so far.
  • Science - We will continue to learn about the water cycle and how it relates to weather. We will take a look at different types of clouds that may form as water condenses in the atmosphere. 
  • Social Studies - Students will zoom in to take an even closer look at everyday life in the colonies. They will read to understand how children studied and played, the importance of religion, what people read for entertainment, and typical colonial meals.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - We will continue Topic 5. Students will learn how to apply the Distributive Property to multiply a whole number by a mixed number, and solve some real world problems involving multiplication of fractions, mixed numbers, and/or whole numbers. A homework review over Lessons 3-5 is planned for later in the week.
