WEEK OF OCTOBER 6

It's An Election Year!
We have had some great discussions in the classroom about the republican and democratic candidates running for U.S. President. I hope you find opportunities to talk with your 5th graders at home about this exciting election. We will continue to learn more about the two major political parties, the candidates, and the election process as we prepare for a mock election in November.

Checking Student Progress
Tuesday, October 7th marks the midpoint of the 1st Trimester. Please check your child's progress on ParentConnect. As always, contact your child's teacher(s) if you have any questions or concerns.

Field Trip - Change of Date!
I want to remind parents that there was a change in date for the 5th grade field trip to see "The Legend of Pocahontas." We will be going one week later than originally scheduled. Students will need a sack lunch on our new field trip date - Friday, October 24th!

Subject Update:

Science and Social Studies (Homeroom)
  • Science - The students will be starting an Earth Science unit about "Cycles on Earth and in Space." We will begin by learning about the atmosphere.
  • Social Studies - As we continue to learn about Jamestown, the first successful English colony, the students will go to the computer lab to make decisions like a settler of long ago. This experience will help the students recognize how the environment and existing people in America either helped or hindered the success of a colony. Then the students will read about the colony of Plymouth.

Language Arts Block

  • Spelling - Lesson 6 will focus on words that form plurals with -es.
  • English - The students will be learning about commas. We will begin our comma work with the book, "Eats, Shoots & Leaves." This book demonstrates all the ways to use commas in sentences. It also does a wonderful job illustrating how the use and misuse of commas can really change the meaning of a sentence!!
  • Reading - We have introduced the October "Mystery Book Puzzle" project to the students. Hand-outs included directions for completing the project, a worksheet to use while reading the book, the grader we will use to assess the project, and a note home regarding book choices. Please review this information with your child. Book choices for this project are due Friday, October 10th! In class, we will be working on summarizing stories by thinking about the parts of a story.

Math Classroom
  • Math - The students will continue to work on dividing whole numbers. Don't forget to keep reviewing those basic facts!!
