Prairieview Needs Market Day Help!

Please be advised that it is Prairieview's turn to volunteer for Market Day and this Saturday is our first time. If you can help, please report to Lakeview at 8:00 a.m. Thanks in advance!


MAP Testing
Our class will be taking the MAP tests for Reading on Monday and Math on Thursday next week. Please encourage your child to "DO Your Best," and make sure your child is well-rested and eats a nutritious breakfast!

Looking Ahead... Lakeview Parent Meeting
There will be a meeting for interested parents regarding the Lakeview schedule for next year
on Monday January 9 at 7:00 p.m in the Lakeview gym. They will have a presentation
outlining key components to the schedule as well as provide sample schedules of students that
are involved in enrichment and/or support classes.

Too Good For Drugs Program
Deputy Seward from the DuPage County Sheriff's Department visited our classroom on Thursday for our first session of T.G.F.D. A letter explaining more about the program was sent home with students. Also, students received a homework assignment that should be completed with their families to reinforce the ideas shared during session 1.

Spelling Bee
We had a practice bee this past week to help students understand the rules and procedures of our official "Classroom Bee". Our Classroom Spelling Bee is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10. Our classroom winner and runner-up will participate in the 5th Grade Spelling Bee on Wednesday, January 18.

Six Flag's Read to Succeed Reminder
This is just a reminder that students participating in this reading program need to return the forms to me by February 1st. You may turn in forms prior to the due date if the reading goal is reached early!!


Subject Update:
  • Spelling - The Lesson 16 pretest will be on Monday. Based on the pretest, students will be given either the regular or challenge word lists. Homework will be assigned during the week to practice their words. Both regular and challenge word tests are on Friday.
  • English - We will continue our study of pronouns. Students will learn how to use "I" and "me" correctly, replace possessive nouns with possessive pronouns, write contractions with pronouns, avoid double subjects, and use "we" and "us" correctly.
  • Reading - We will continue our focus on main ideas and supporting details and summarizing non-fiction text using The Golden Lion Tamarin Comes Home. READING TIC-TAC-TOE: Students have their Tic-Tac-Toe sheets for 2nd trimester. Please monitor your child's progress and encourage your child to read at home to earn Tic-Tac-Toe by March 2nd!
  • Science - We are learning about chemical changes and how they are different than physical changes. The Chapter 14 Test is scheduled for Wednesday, January 11!
  • Social Studies - The students will learn more about the Spanish expanding their claim to land in what is now the Southwest region of the United States, as well as the French exploring the Mississippi River.
  • Mrs. Strong's Math Class - The students will continue their work with geometry in Chapter 10. They will learn about circles and use formulas to find the circumference and area of circles.
